How to Dispose of Laptops, PCs and Computer Equipment

If you buy a new system or piece of equipment you will likely be covered under the WEEE regulations. This means they are obligated to remove items which would otherwise be waste.

However, where items are not being replaced or are additional you will need to arrange disposal of the computer waste yourselves.

What to do with old computers?

You can take several steps for computer disposal yourself. A quick checklist would include:

  • Remove licensed software, especially where it can be transferred within your company.
  • Delete personal and confidential data. You probably have an obligation to do this under Data Protection legislation.
  • Identify if there are any parts you can reuse. Examples might include cables, removable drives and media.
  • Ensure your drives are wiped. Yes Waste can do this to internationally accepted standards.
  • Get a Waste Transfer Note. Only send equipment to reputable companies to ensure you are covered under Waste Regulations.

What kind of Computer and IT Equipment can Yes Waste take?

Some IT Equipment is classed as Hazardous Waste...

Exactly what counts as hazardous can be complicated, and depends on the parts used in each device. If you aren’t sure, call Yes Waste on 0800 058 2522 and we’ll be happy to advise. Cameras, projectors and photocopiers are all hazardous IT equipment when being disposed of. Examples of hazardous waste include:
