If you have started to notice that the cushions don’t spring back to life after a night of watching TV, this is just one of the three major signs (see below) telling you that it may be time to replace your current sofa with a new one.
The upholstery shows signs of wear and tear:
Over time, the look of a sofa will begin to deteriorate due to the general day-to-day wear and tear. The upholstery may become frayed, faded (especially if the sofa is placed in direct sunlight), and stained. If your sofa has a stain, you may be able to remove it via spot cleaning or, you could hire a professional cleaner who may use a steam cleaner which will help brighten the look and get rid of any odours.
If the upholstery has torn, you could investigate having it reupholstered although the process can be quite expensive due to the cost of the material and the time it takes to complete the job.
It begins to make noises:
If you hear noises coming from the sofa when you sit down, it is usually a sign that there is some form of structural damage, e.g. the problem could be due to the joints on the frame or a spring.
Although older furniture was usually constructed with hardwood and screws, today’s furniture is usually constructed with manufactured woods, staples and glue. Either way, in many cases, the cost of repairing the structural damage can be almost as much, if not more than purchasing a new sofa.
Your knees are up to your chest:
If the cushions on the sofa have gone flat and the lumbar support is gone, it’s time to make a change. However, if the rest of the upholstery is fine, you may be able to fix the cushion by removing the current filling from the cushions (if you can do this without ruining the sofa) and replacing it with a new piece of foam.
I’ve bought a new sofa; how do I dispose of the old one?
After you have made the decision to purchase a new sofa, the next thing you need to consider is how to dispose of the old one. With that in mind, you have the following options:
Donate it
Most charities through within Yorkshire and the Humber are happy to take old sofas off your hands for free and you are making a difference to those less fortunate than yourself. If you are considering donating your sofa to charity, please make sure that the item is clean, has the original fire label still attached, and is in generally good condition, e.g. no rips, tears, stains or odours.
Take it to the local tip
A sofa is quite heavy and bulky. If you wish to take it to the tip/recycle centre, make sure you have help from a few (strong) people to help as well as suitable transport.
Waste Removal Company
Another option is to use a specialist waste removal company like Yes Waste (that’s us) to remove your sofa. The advantage of using a company like ourselves is that we respond quickly, collect the sofa from inside or outside your property within an agreed 2-hour time frame, and we’ll do all the moving and lifting too. We can remove your old sofa as part of our furniture removal service.
Please Note:
If you use a waste removal company, please ensure that they hold a valid waste carriers license (ours is CBDU117809), have insurance and will provide you with a waste transfer note.
