As a registered licensed waste carrier, we will provide you with a hazardous waste consignment note which is a legal requirement. From there, we will assess the fridge to see if it can be reused or recycled. If the fridge cannot be re-used, it is recycled legally in accordance with the WEEE directive.

Why is a fridge hazardous waste?

Whether you are a business or a household within Cardiff, you still have a legal obligation to ensure that any hazardous waste, such as a fridge, is disposed of safely and legally.

Waste is considered ‘hazardous’ under the government’s environmental legislation (see here) when it contains substances or has properties that may make it harmful to human health or the environment. This does not necessarily mean it is an immediate risk to human health, although some waste can be.

Most refrigerators have a life span of around 10 to years, however, sooner or later, it will need to be replaced. It is very important at this point to recycle them as they all contain refrigerants (the substance that keeps your fridge cool by absorbing heat) that are potent greenhouse gases, and therefore, harmful to the environment.

What happens to a fridge?

After we have collected a fridge from within the Cardiff region, it is assessed to determine if it can be reused. If we believe the fridge cannot be reused, it will be sent for processing at a dedicated recycling plant. Although over 95% of an average fridge is recyclable, it is still deconstructed within a sealed environment so that any harmful substances can be safely removed.

Once this has been achieved, the rest of the fridge materials are separated into individual streams, including plastics, ferrous and non-ferrous metals and foam to be recycled or reused.
